Bobcats Raise $8,500 for St. Baldrick’s

BISMARCK, ND – The Bismarck Bobcats teamed up with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation during Monday’s game against the Austin Bruins at the VFW Sports Center and raised over $8,500 for the charity.

It is the second straight year that the Cats have partnered with St. Baldrick’s and local organizer Basin Electric Power Cooperative and the first time they’ve ever donned special edition green and white jerseys for the cause. The jerseys were auctioned off after the game, with team captain and leading scorer Matt Gates’ uniform fetching the high bid of the night at $1,000.00.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation centers around volunteers earning pledges to shave their heads—usually on St. Patrick’s Day—in order to raise funds for the most promising cures for childhood cancer.

In the spirit of the night, Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie and assistant coach Adam Gill both got their heads shaved during the first intermission. Bobcats play-by-play voice Paul Teeple joined the coaches in facing the clippers after pledging to go bald if the team’s twitter account reached 500 followers—a feat accomplished four hours before game time Monday.

“We’re so thrilled at the way the event turned out,” beamed event coordinator Emily McKay from Basin Electric. “I never expected to raise so much money from the jerseys; the fans and players were great!”

Four Bobcat players—Charlie Mosey, Jason Nash, John Furgele and Nick Miglio—will take part in the St. Baldrick’s Day event at Basin Electric on Thursday, where they, too, will get their heads shaved for the cause. Basin Electric’s St. Baldrick’s Day event has already raised over $78,000 for 2011—in addition to the money raised Monday at the VFW Sports Center!

Fans interested in making separate donations to this year’s St. Baldrick’s Day event can find more information online at http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/eventid/770/eventyear/2011 .

Bobcat Hockey would like to thank all of its fans, sponsors, volunteers and staff, and especially its partners at Basin Electric, for making this year’s St. Baldrick’s Night a smashing success!

Bobcats Fall 2-1 to Bruins

BISMARCK, ND – The Bismarck Bobcats remain three points out of first place after finishing a three-game weekend 2-1-0 after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Austin Bruins Monday at the VFW Sports Center.

“We’re pretty disappointed in the result tonight,” admitted Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie. “We haven’t been able to learn from our past mistakes and now we face a five-game run of must-win games to close the season.”

The visiting Bruins claimed a 1-0 lead 2:59 into the game when a loose puck pinballed off Bobcats and Bruins, glancing off forward Jordan Greenberg and past Ryan Faragher for the game’s first goal.

Austin extended their lead with seven seconds left in the period when Alex Tesensky converted a defensive zone turnover by the Cats into a power play goal to boost the visitors to a 2-0 edge.

Tyler Richter got the Bobcats on the board with 9:12 to go in regulation, getting loose for a breakaway on a long pass from Charlie Mosey and striking the puck through goalie Keegan Asmundson, cutting the lead to 2-1, but the Bobcats would draw no closer.

The Bruins deployed a neutral zone trap through the majority of the final frame, stymieing the Bobcat attack and giving Asmundson a clear look at most shots sent his way.

“We’ve seen Asmundson for a number of years in the Central and tonight he was at the best I’ve ever seen him,” noted Sedevie, a former goaltender at Bemidji State. “He was the difference in tonight’s game, no doubt.”

Asmundson made 49 saves on the way to his 16th win of the year while Faragher made 27 stops but fell to 29-17-2.

The Bobcats have no time to lick their wounds, however, with a two-game road trip to Alexandria to take on the red-hot Blizzard at the Runestone Centre, starting Friday at 7:30 PM.

Friday’s series opener will be broadcast locally on the radio home of Bobcat Hockey, Super Talk 1270, KLXX-AM, and worldwide at http://nahl.fasthockey.com/. As with all away games during the 2010-11 season, fans are encouraged to view the game at Reza’s Pitch—the official away game Home of the Bobcats—at the corner of Third and Front in Bismarck. Pre-game coverage will begin at 7:00 PM CT.
