Feb 2, 2024

BISMARCK, ND – Former Bismarck Bobcats goaltender Ian Shane has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. The prestigious honor is given annually to the best player in NCAA Division I College Hockey.

Shane, currently a goaltender at Cornell University, was one of 15 NAHL alumni among the 84 athletes nominated.

“Ian has had a great college career so far,” Bobcats Head Coach and General Manager Layne Sedevie said. “To be recognized as a Hobey Baker nominee is one of the best achievements you can receive in college hockey.”

Now a junior with the Big Red, Shane has notched a save percentage of .919 and goals against average of 1.71 in 18 appearances this season. The Manhattan Beach, California, native has recorded two shutouts on the year.

All nominees meet numerous criteria to be eligible for the award. These include strength of character, contribution to integrity of the team, outstanding skills in all phases of the game, scholastic achievement, and sportsmanship. In addition, recipients must be in compliance with all NCAA rules, be a full-time student, and complete more than 50 percent of their season.

Soon, the list of current nominees will be narrowed to ten individuals. From there, the list goes down to three “Hobey Hat Trick Finalists.” One winner is selected among the Hat Trick finalists and announced at the 2024 Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Fan voting is underway now at hobeybaker.com/vote and will run until Sunday, March 10 at midnight. Fan votes account for a percentage of the overall ballot in selecting the award’s recipient.

On the Bobcats roster during the 2020-21 season, Shane registered a .914 save percentage and 2.60 goals against average in 16 regular season appearances.

Recent Hobey Baker winners include Ryan Miller, Jack Eichel, Cale Makar, and Cole Caufield.
