Small Details Make a Big Difference

What is a tilde? A tilde is the squiggly line above the n in the Spanish language represented as such, ñ. It carries a different pronunciation. The ñ (eñe) creates a nyuh sound similar to canyon.

The Bobcat coaching and hockey operations staff saw a story on Tristen Treviño’s dad, Marco, who was recently named the head coach of the Tri-City Storm. The story was written by Jon Morosi, an NHL.com writer, regarding the importance of culture and representation. Tristen’s father never had the ñ inscribed on his name plate. This past weekend a dream became reality. The ñ was put on Tristen’s jersey to signify and highlight the importance of his heritage and background.

“It’s great obviously. I’m very proud of where I came from and how hard my grandparents and my parents worked to give me opportunities and things they didn’t have growing up. It’s awesome to be able to represent them and my family in a small way, but it still means a lot to me,” Treviño said.

His family was extremely excited when Treviño broke the news to them that the ñ was being added to his jersey. His grandparents attended a game here at the VFW just a couple weekends ago. “I texted them about a week ago when I found out and they were pumped, obviously. My grandparents were here a couple weekends ago and it was great to see them and they were pretty pumped too. I think it’s a cool little thing that everyone likes and my family is a big fan of it,” Treviño added.

Treviño is the youngest defenseman on this Bobcat squad. He is a 2006 birth year and is committed to play collegiate hockey at RMU, following the conclusion of his junior career.
